How to recycle / dispose electronics. Montgomery County residents and businesses may recycle electronics by bringing these items to the Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station. Our electronics drop-off is open daily, and is located in the Recycling Area of the Transfer Station site.

Non-profit organizations like Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity, and St. Vincent de Paul often will take and even pick up mattresses. Call ahead to verify because each local affiliate tends to have different rules and processes for accepting mattresses. Schedule a pick up.

Mixed paper items (paper and cardboard) go into your blue recycling wheeled cart (or in a paper bag, cardboard box, or bundle with twine), and glass/plastic/metal bottles, jars, cans and containers go into your blue bin. Residents can also recycle yard trim (grass clippings, leaves and brush) and Christmas trees.

As you may have expected, given the generous electronics recycling policy that Illinois has adopted, it is illegal to throw electronics in the trash or in the normal recycling bin for that matter.

Microwaves can be disposed of in your regular garbage. Microwaves are not included in the Illinois E-Waste Landfill Ban. If you prefer to have your microwave recycled, you may bring them to your local appliance store or to a drop off location at a local business.

Can a microwave be sold for scrap? ›

Microwaves can be recycled with your electronics OR with your scrap metal. If you choose to put your microwaves with your scrap metal, CAPACITORS MUST BE REMOVED. According to NRRA's metal vendor, in addition to environmental concerns, capacitors can store energy and are fire hazards in scrap piles and dumpsters.

Call your local landfill or garbage center and ask how to dispose of the microwave legally. They usually have special dumpsters or bins for electronics and small appliances.

To dispose of your old television set, ask your waste disposal company or recycling service about electronic waste pick up days or authorized e-waste disposal sites. You can also take your TV to a local recycling facility, donate it to a secondhand store, or sell it if it is in working condition.

Residents can drop off electronics at any Recycling Center at no charge. Electronics from Anne Arundel County businesses are only accepted at the Millersville Landfill. Commercial customers are charged according to our Fee Schedule.

Maryland Environmental Service operates a unique recycling program for midshore residents in Caroline, Kent, Queen Anne's, and Talbot Counties. MES provides electronics recycling at specific locations in each County.

Mattresses and Box Springs are generally picked up as a bulk item with trash and taken to the landfill or incinerator. If your waste hauler will not pick up these items they can be taken to a Construction & Demolition facility for disposal.

Paint and household chemicals:

Accepted every Wednesday and the 3rd Saturday of the month. $10 per 5 gallons of materials; cash or check only.

Waste Management can pick up bulky items from the curb for a fee. They are thrown away at the landfill, not recycled or reused. To schedule pickup, call Waste Management at 1-800-592-9995. You can also dispose of furniture as garbage at King County Transfer Stations, including Houghton Transfer Station in Kirkland.

Curbside collection is currently allowed for the following items with the corresponding fees: Large bulky items: items that cannot be broken down to fit in standard (35-gallon maximum) garbage container or bag. Examples: chair, couch, mattress. Fee: $20.00 for the first item; $10.00 for each additional item per pickup.
