What is the Nexus Mods controversy? ›

1. The Core of the Issue: Nexus Mods banned modifications that aimed to remove They/Them pronouns from Starfield. This decision by one of the largest modding communities has sparked a debate about the limits of creative freedom and the role of modding platforms in shaping game content.

A lot of modders are leaving Nexus because of some of the frankly unethical decisions they've made. The nexus has made a rather invasive u-turn of late when they should only just publish. They even insulted their own long-term users in the process.

All mod files shared on our website must pass through several security checks before they can be downloaded by the community. If any of these checks fail during the upload process, the file will be quarantined and will be unavailable until it has been reviewed by a moderator.

Founded in 2001 as Morrowind Chronicles, a The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind fan site, it became Morrowind Source with the addition of hosting mods for Morrowind. It continued to rebrand as it expanded to support more games, as TESSource, TESNexus, the Nexus, and finally Nexus Mods.

As you all likely know, Nexus Mods makes use of advertising on the website to create a source of income which is subsequently used to pay for the range of expenses the site accrues in its daily operations. I'm sure we'll all agree that adverts, in any format, really are a pain in the backside.

All Nexus files are scanned when uploaded. Most files in a mod cannot contain viruses. Some can. Don't download anything with an EXE or DLL unless a huge number of people have already tried it and know it is safe.

In general, SMAPI is a reliable and safe open-source based tool, meaning that its code is openly available for review and inspection. Additionally, SMAPI is available on the official Stardew Valley modding website and GitHub repository, adding extra credibility to its name.

The Nexus is a legit mod site. It existed long before the workshop. They do, however, have fewer restrictions on their mods, so there may be some issued here and there, but it is unlikely you will have to deal with them as long as you read the mods reviews/comments first.
