Crime Numbers

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) provides crime statistics for all counties in the state. Its latest annual crime reports show that York County recorded 985 violent crimes and 6,628 property crimes in 2017. These figures reveal that violent crime (13%) and property crime (12.8%) rates went up in 2017 compared to 2013. A detailed look at reported crimes for 2017 shows there were 10 murders, 104 sexual assaults, 171 robberies, and 700 aggravated assaults in the county. In the same year, the county recorded 1,042 burglaries, 5,207 larcenies, and 379 motor vehicle thefts.

Between 2013 and 2017, burglary rate (10%) declined in York County while murder rate remained flat. The five-year crime trend for the county also indicates that sexual assault (4%), robbery (36.8%), aggravated assault (9.9%), larceny (17.1%), and motor vehicle theft (38.3%) rates increased.

Criminal Records

The SLED maintains criminal history records for York County and the rest of the state. It provides these records by mail and online and charges a non-refundable fee of $25 for each request. To view criminal history records online, visit the SLED Citizens Access to Criminal Histories (CATCH) portal. The requester can print the criminal history records from search results. The Sled charges an additional $1 as a convenience fee for online access and accepts credit/debit card for payment.

The SLED only provides name-based criminal history reports for the general public. It only provides fingerprint-based criminal history reports when ordered by state and federal statutes.

The SLED maintains the records of registered sex offenders living in York County and the rest of the state in the South Carolina Sex Offender Registry (SORT). Residents of York County can access and search this database to find registered sex offenders living in the neighborhoods. Jail Information

The York County Detention Center is the primary jail in the county. This 565-bed facility is under the supervision of the Sheriff's Office and it is located at the Moss Justice Center (address above).

The Sheriff's Office provides multiple ways to fund the accounts of inmates held at the facility. The Detention Center allows friends and family to send money to inmates using Western Union and U.S. Postal Money Order. Make sure to indicate the inmate's name and identification number on the money order. Visitors to the jail can also use the kiosk in the lobby to deposit funds in inmates’ accounts. Inmate Records

Information on inmates currently held at the York County Detention Center is available on the Sheriff's Office website. Available records include mugshots, biographical data, and charges of each inmate. Use the search engine on the site to locate an offender recently booked or incarcerated within the year. Court Records

The York County Circuit Court is the county's primary trial court and belongs to the state's Sixteenth Judicial Circuit. The Circuit Court has two divisions with one handling civil cases while the other hears criminal matters. It hears appeals from lower courts including the Probate Court, Magistrate Court, and Municipal Court. Vital Records

York County divorce records from July 1962 to December 2014 are available from the Vital Records Office of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). These divorce records are certified copies of Divorce Reports and not Divorcee Decrees. Each certified copy costs $12. Each additional copy of the same record ordered alongside costs $3. To order a copy, submit a completed application form and enclose a copy of a valid government-issued photo ID and a money order or cashier's check for the fee. Send these to:

Applications can be submitted in person or by mail to the address above. The office is open to the public Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. To obtain copies of divorce records before July 1962 and after December 2014, contact York County Clerk of Court. This office also accepts requests for divorce decrees.

The DHEC Vital Records Office provides York County marriage records from July 1950 to December 2016. Use the same application form as divorce records to request marriage records. The fees and steps required are also the same. Copies of York County marriage records between July 1950 and after December 2016 are available from the county's Probate Court at the address above.

The DHEC Vital Records Office also maintains records for births and deaths that occurred in York County. Birth and death records can be obtained from either the state office of DHEC or local/regional office in the county. The process and fees for requesting these records are the same as for divorce and marriage records. Submit a completed birth or death application form along with a money order or cashier's check for the appropriate fee and a photocopy of a valid photo ID.
